Everyone’s kid is different, and some pick up information quicker than others, that doesn’t mean they are any less intelligent, they should learn at a different pace to others. When dealing with slow learners, you have to incredibly patient. Instead of losing your head, parents must take their time and help their children. Labeling a kid, a slow learner is unfair, as many kids just need an extra bit of assistance.
Slow Learners
A child who is usually labelled a slow learner is a kid who struggles to learn new concepts at the same rate as other students in the class. If a kid is lucky to go to a leading international school in Bangkok, the teachers are generally quick at identifying kids who need extra help. They notify the parents to ensure the student gets more attention than others. This sometimes doesn’t happen at public schools, so it is important to stay vigilant and regularly communicate with your child’s teacher.
Here are some things to look out for when evaluating your child:
- Reaches milestones slower than other kids
- Has a poor attention span or trouble concentrating?
- Struggle with simple concepts
- Has difficulty retaining information they have learned
- Is socially immature or reclusive
If you think your child is a slow learner, be patient with them and provide the necessary tools and environment for them to excel.
Helping Slow Learners
There are many ways to help your child outside of school if they are a slow learner. Before you do, make sure the school is doing everything to help them while they attend. When they study, make sure they have a quiet area which allows them to focus without any distractions. If they’ve a short attention span, keep assignments and homework sessions short. Help them work through projects and ask them questions as they move through the assignment.
When they’ve finished a task, test them to see if they understand the concept. If they are struggling, have them repeat it and give them clues to assist. It is important to read to your child and be patient and consistent.
Don’t criticise them for being slow learners, it will only affect their progress. All kids have the potential to be great, so don’t give up on your children if they are slower at learning than others. Aside from helping at home, you should also stay connected with teachers, so you know the situation at school.
