Separating fact from fiction in finance and economics

Spinning Out Of Control

August 24th, 2010 by reality

California is a financial disaster area. Bribed Democratic legislators cannot bear the thought of depriving their clients of the favors they have bought, and Republicans will not agree to raise taxes to pay said clients their ill-gotten gains. So there is no budget, and the state is now about to start printing its own money. Since these so-called “IOUs” are are to be accepted by the state for payment for goods and services, they are, in fact, currency. Which is, by the way, unconstitutional. But hey, that’s just a piece of paper.

Meanwhile, the distribution of largesse continues as exemplified by this $578 million school. That’s about $140,000 per student, or probably $6,000 per student in interest costs alone. Including operating costs, maintenance, insurance, debt amortization, etc., that school probably costs more than $10,000 per student per year. And that doesn’t include the highest-paid teachers in the U.S., to say nothing of the administrative overhead.
