why is it…

August 16th, 2007 by alameda

Steve Hargadon writes

What Will Teachers Be Like in 10 Years?

Why is it so hard to have a national dialog about anything of significance right now? It seems like we so quickly polarize into political/religious/social camps that we’ve lost the ability to listen and hear opinions different than our own, and so have lost the ability to deal with any issues of complexity in a civil way. We desperately need a national dialog on education, but it won’t be useful to us if it’s a “national argument.”

I couldn’t agree more.

walk to school

August 16th, 2007 by alameda

Yes, there are solutions to childhood obesity. And there are lots of schools and communities working to implement them.

Local School Wellness Policies: Walking Their Way to Wellness

Schools are not only encouraging students to walk to school, many are also urging students to walk at school. At one Evansville, Indiana, middle school, a walking club is available for students to walk in the mornings, before classes start. Nearly 200 students participate in the morning walking club and a lunchtime club has been established at the request of students unable to participate in the morning.

… discipline had greatly improved among students who participate in the walking clubs. In addition, students were, by far, more awake and ready to focus on class time

These are great stories. Perhaps they will catch on.

inadequate sleep & obesity

August 16th, 2007 by alameda

Could it really be this simple? If kids get enough sleep, they are less likely to be obese.

Childhood obesity linked to youngsters staying up too late

Good sleep could be promoted by removing televisions and other electronic items from children’s bedrooms and ensuring a strict, regular bedtime routine, he said.

He said “Ensuring adequate sleep in children and adolescents may not only help fighting against obesity, but could have other added health and educational benefits – for example improvements in academic performance.

“An obesity prevention approach in children and adolescents that promotes a healthy diet, physical activity and adequate sleep could be adopted.”

In looking for positive deviance, there are a couple of easy survey questions – regular hours of sleep, regular enforced bed time, own TV or entertainment system, evening cell phone usage.

Adequate sleep. Definitely could be a significant contribution to a low-cost, habit-forming solution.
