cassandra

February 26th, 2007 by alameda
In Greek mythology, Cassandra (”she who entangles men”) (also known as Alexandra) was a daughter of King Priam of Troy and his queen Hecuba, who captured the eye of Apollo and so was given the ability to see the future. However, when she did not return his love, he placed a curse on her so that no one would ever believe her predictions. Thus Cassandra foresees the destruction of Troy (she warns the Trojans about the Trojan Horse, the death of Agamemnon, and her own demise), but is unable to do anything about them. Coroebus and Othronus came to the aid of Troy out of love for Cassandra.

museum of arts & design - nyc

February 26th, 2007 by alameda

For nearly half a century, the Museum of Arts & Design has served as the country’s premier institution dedicated to the collection and exhibition of contemporary objects created in clay, glass, wood, metal and fiber. The Museum celebrates materials and processes that are today embraced by artists in the fields of craft, art and design.

Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting at the Museum of Arts and Design.

The exhibition features 27 artists from seven countries using yarn and other fibers to make beautiful, strange and thought-provoking art. From tiny articles of clothing to huge lacy objects designed to change when the wind blows, these projects use traditional materials as well as not-so-traditional found objects, video and computers to make a statement about the changing face of knitting, crafting, and art in the world today.

Objects in the exhibit are knitted by hand and machine. One piece is a computer program that educates users about sweatshop labor. The pieces are lovely, humorous, ironic and fun, and are sure to get you thinking about yarn and the act of knitting in a new way.

cruising tips

February 26th, 2007 by alameda

lessons learned to make cruising simpler and more convenient without having to have a lot of stuff

laundry - pay to have laundry done - wash, dry and fold for $8/load is a good deal - watch for little surprises like extra shirts or missing underwear

coffee - make filter coffee into a thermos so only need to heat up one pot of water - keeps the boat cool and the coffee hot

eggs - hard boil several eggs, then refrigerate - they keep for a long time and can be added to salads without having to heat up the boat to make a salad or sandwich on a hot day.

zip bags - great for storing everything - coffee, leftovers, crackers, soap…

light line - loops to hold the boat hook in place on the deck, extend pull tab on sail cover zipper so it is easier to reach and provides leverage for pulling, loop on lazy jack to keep main halyard from banging on the mast.

foam mattress pad - place over regular boat cushions in bunks that will be used nightly for extended cruising, then roll up and store when boat is in day sailing configuration
