Faculty Development as Community Building

September 29th, 2006 by alameda

B.J. Eib and Pam Miller University of Calgary, Canada write
Faculty Development as Community Building

When faculty development is viewed as an ongoing need and when we approach faculty development as a long-term, continuous effort, community building becomes a part of the process. Carefully designed faculty development approaches can facilitate and create a culture that supports a thoughtful focus on teaching, while at the same time, nurture a sense of connectedness and collegiality across the organization that is vital to continuous innovation and improvement. This paper reports on a program designed to improve the collegial culture at a higher educational organization in Western Canada. While the program was aimed at a Social Work Faculty at a research university, we believe the design can be modified and applied in other disciplines and in other environments, such as distant and open universities. We conclude with suggestions for applying our approach to faculty development in open and distance institutional contexts.

potluck

September 28th, 2006 by alameda

It was a great success! A street potluck can be arranged on reatively short notice and have a good turn out. With about 7 days notice - flyers posted at all the post box pickup points for the court - we did it!.

About 15-20 people showed up with food and drink. Lots of neighbors were away or unable to attend, but the turn out was still pretty good, and those who did come had a good time.

Things to remember:
provide plates, plastic forks, napkins, glasses - people bring lots of food, but nothing for eating with
name tags, markers - name and street number was very helpful / appreciated
serving spoons - food but no serving spoons
openers
garage cans
extra chairs
tables for food
flashlights, lighting for dusk til dark - candles, lanterns would have been nice
water, sodas, beer, wine - just incase people bring food but nothing to drink

We weren”t sure if this would be munchies or dinner. People brought
pizza
chicken wings
cheese
salads
wine, beer, soda, water
- no dessert

An Online Math Program
The Illinois NetMath distance education program offers online math courses for credit from the University of Illinois (an accredited university). Unlike most Internet math programs at other universities, this program is highly flexible. Students can enroll and begin the course at any time. Most students finish their course with 16 to 32 weeks. NetMath students never have to come to the Illinois campus. Exams are done through local proctoring and the quizzes are done online.
