mortgage fraud

January 26th, 2007 by ..byxbee

California’s recent cold snap will likely result in $1 billion damage to citrus and produce crops, putting some 13,000 farm workers - mostly undocumented, out of work. Big news. However, behind the scenes is the quiet unraveling of another growth industry - housing speculation and mortgage fraud.

mortgage fraud … one of those little illegal real estate things everyone does

Mortgage fraud — the worst crime no one’s heard of
SF Chronicle
Others have already been convicted of securities fraud and other con schemes. They’re professionals.”

$80 million federal grand jury case involving more than 100 homes in Indiana. Also, last year, one of the largest property owners in Buffalo, N.Y., was convicted of perpetrating a $4 million fraud-for-profit scheme, sentenced to a year in prison and slapped with a $1.5 million fine.

The New York Times has reported on the precipitous rise in mortgage fraud, quoting the FBI that lenders lost an estimated $1 billion last year, double the previous year’s estimate, from mortgage fraud.

Rachel Dollar, a Santa Rosa attorney representing institutional clients in mortgage-fraud cases and the creator of MortgageFraudBlog.com provides plenty of details. While there are lots of small fry being caught, there are some bigger fish as well.

  • Southern California Woman Sues Investment Group Alleging Mortgage Fraud (Temecula, California)
over 400 investors in “Jovane-realted fraud schemes” and that each “‘owns’ at least several properties with individuals loans values of $550,000-$800,000”. The complaint estimates the fraud value to be in the hundreds of millions.

  • Unlicensed DC Appraiser Sentenced for His Role in Flip Scheme
… sentenced to 46 months in prison, ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $5,045,460 and was also placed on three years of supervised release following his release from prison.

[It isn’t clear how this guy is going to come up with the $5m restitution money, so that’s proabaly a write-off]

And then there are the folks who are publicly discussing their misdeeds, lik real estate “investor” Casey Serin, of www.iamfacingforeclosure.com
